イラク戦争が終結して2003年4月21日から占領統治するも、イラク武装勢力により2004年11月18日に進駐したアメリカ兵士とポーランド兵士が攻撃されて戦死した遺体を運搬した。2004年11月にはアメリカ兵士が戦死して月間で最高の死者数137名にも達する。
